Ushiro Kesa Gatame - Reverse Scarf Hold ![]() Ushiro-kesa-gatame, also known as Gyaku-kesa-gatame. Known by the Kodokan as Kuzure-kesa-gatame, in the UK there is a marked difference between that technique and this. To perform the technique, sit down by their head on one side of a laid-down partner - with your legs in the same direction as theirs. The arm nearest your opponents head goes either under their shoulder to their belt, or with your arm tight in the armpit, again, holding on to them near their belt if you cannot reach their belt. The other arm is then tucked underneath your armpit. Alternatively, you can hold the other side of the arms as shown below: ![]() Ushiro-kesa-gatame has been shown to me with your closest leg resting on their legs. This version is much the weaker, and gives your opponent a great opportunity to lock your leg and thus break the hold. |
