Yoko Wakare

Yoko-wakare - Side Seperation

Yoko-wakare is sometimes described as the 'disappearing act' as tori literally disappears from view in a sudden.

Stepping to the side of the hikite with both feet, tori falls to the floor taking uke with them. As you can see from the abovem the technique can be performed with a usual tsurite grip, and also with the arm thrown under as ippon-seoi-nage (although the grip can be taken more than Ippon-seoi-nage).

Various other throws are like yoko-wakare, two of which are in Koshiki-no-kata:

1. Kuruma-gaeshi (or Guruma-gaeshi) - Wheel Reversal.
As Yoko-wakare, but tori takes grip of both lapels.

2. Mizu-iri - Water Holder.
Again, like Yoko-wakare, almost like the ippon-seoi arm, but hold on around the armpit of uke.

Yoko-wakare is also familiar to Ude-gaeshi and Uchi-makikomi.
